Keeping in Touch

While having a conversation with my Niece this weekend she told me she didn't need a cell phone because she is a stay at home Mom.  I thought to myself, I am home all the time why is it I need a cell phone?  But of course I know why.
The big reason is I am married to a Ship Captain. Something about being away from someone 6 months out of the year.  I know years back before there were cell phones Sailors and their spouses would go weeks or months without talking to each other.  I know I would of gone BANANAS. Okay, I am a strong person and I would of found a way to get by but having the cell phone makes life so much easier and happier. He has one so he can call whenever he is in cell range which is only when he is close to land or in port. which pretty much eliminates all the Lakes since they are way bigger than you'd imagine if you've never seen them.  I am however spoiled though since he is the Captain he can use the phone on his desk which is a satellite phone , there is a delay which took me awhile to get used to but heck I don't care its better than not talking to him at all!  So getting back to why I have a cell phone!    Now while there are advantages to him being the Captain which I mentioned previously, there are also disadvantages. All the other sailors on the ship except the Chief Engineer have certain hours they work 4-8, 8-12, or 12-4 get break and do it again. Anders on the other hand works all the rivers, canals, plus docking and "undocking" the ship. The ship NEVER stops working. Like take tonight for example. He has been crossing Lake Erie most of the day, during this time he has tons of paperwork to do and try to get in at least 6 hours of sleep (rarely can he sleep 8 hours) he will get called at midnight , navigate the river, get to the fuel dock and grab a quick 1 hour nap, and get out on Lake Huron where there is a gale blowing tomorrow morning. Of course I'll be waking up, he'll be going to bed. If he gets out on the Lake before he thinks I'm awake he won't call until later in the day.  So if I am out and about doing something if I didn't have a cell phone he wouldn't be able to talk to me , and I probably wouldn't leave the house until I did. Yep, my day just isn't the same unless I can talk to him. Its like a drug....if I talk to him before I go to bed I will sleep just that much better, he relaxes me. If I talk to him first thing in the morning then I am way more productive during the day.  It been that way since I "met" him. Yep, I'm hooked or should I stay addicted?
